Learn to Row (or previous rowing experience) is a pre-requisite for this program.
Rowing is an exciting, adrenaline-rushing team sport. Durham Rowing Club’s crews’ success is built on determination combined with comradeship, club spirit and fun. Rowing works all major muscle groups in the body and is gentle on aging joints. Recreational rowers take their rowing seriously and adhere to the policies and procedures of the Club. Safety on the water is of prime importance.
Recreational rowers commence rowing in May and continue until the docks come out in the fall.
Recreational Program Rowing is mainly conducted during the time slot reserved for that program. (May to Docks come out, Monday to Thursday each evening 1830 to dusk and on Saturdays 0800-1200)
DRC Recreational Program is entering its ninth season. Our Recreational sport rowing crews compete in regattas throughout the summer and into September. The regattas include racing events for both men and women, usually at a distance of 1000m. Head Race, which are of variable length take place in the fall.
It is not necessary to race, many club members row several times a week and simply enjoy the exercise and beautiful sights and sounds on Lake Scugog (sunsets, loons, lions, herons, geese and frolicking carp).
Recreational rowers also enjoy other club activities and outings such as walking in the spring and fall, BBQ’s etc.
Recreational rowing sessions are held Mondays and Wednesdays from 6.30 p.m. to dusk and Saturday mornings from 8 AM till noon. The normal rowing session is approximately two hours.
Recreational Rowers meet at the Boathouse in Port Perry at the above specified times rain or shine. A decision as to row, or not to row, is usually made on the dock where weather conditions may vary from that which are encountered elsewhere in the region.
Fees
The Program fees for current rowing season are determined by the DRC Board of Directors each January to ensure sustainable rowing operations. See the registration form for current fees.
