Regatta News
It was a great weekend for a regatta and we saw some great results from our athletes at the CORA St. Catharine’s regatta on July 10, 2010. The day started early for our U17 Men crew. Mike Alcorn and Ryan Lamoureux hit the water
early to start the day of racing for the Durham Rowing Club. It was a great race which saw Mike and Ryan cross the finish line in third place winning the bronze medal. Next up was the U23 Women Single race where Rachelle Krause was up against some very tough competition. She kept the race close and finished fifth in her race. Next was our first masters race of the season. Jessica Sherwin took to the water in the Master’s Women Single and after a close race Jessica crossed the finish
line at the front of the pack to take the gold! The next race for the Durham crew was Adam Ballard and Scott Wilson in the Sr. Men Double. It was a hard fought race for second place but Adam and Scott were not able to close the gap in the final stages of the race. They crossed the finish line in third to take the bronze medal. Connor Lamoureux and Ryan Lamoureux then moved into the starting gate for the U19 Men Double. Connor and Ryan were up against some tough competition and they were able to cross the finish line ahead of the Argonaut team that also raced in the
U17 Men Double race. The final races of the day for the Durham crew were the U17 men single races. Mike Alcorn, Ryan Lamoureux and Connor Lamoureux were the respective rowers in the three U17 single races. Mike got out into second place through 1000m where he put up a good fight but was unable to hold off two other rowers from St. Catharine’s and Silver Lake and was overtaken and placed fourth. Ryan Lamoureux was off in the next race, having rowed two races today, Ryan came into this race a little tired. He was able to keep two boats behind him and place fourth. The last race of the day for the Durham crew was Connor Lamoureux in the U17 men single. Connor got himself into third position quickly and was able to hold on to third through to the finish line for the bronze medal. It was a great end to the day and rounded out the medal count. The Durham crew took bronze medals in the U17 men double, Sr. Men double, U17 men single and a gold medal in the master’s women single. Full results can be seen here..
After resting for the remainder of the day the master’s rowers were back at it on Sunday July 11, 2010 for the ROWONTARIO Master’s Championship. Jessica Sherwin started the day off in the women lightweight single, she
quickly got out into the lead and increased it as the race progressed and she finished with at time of 4:49.54 to take the gold medal. Jessica’s second race was the women single race; this was a close race that saw Jessica cross the line in third place with a time of 5:03.37 for the bronze. The third race of the day for Durham was a mixed double with Jessica Sherwin and Adam Ballard. This race was a close race; Jessica and Adam were racing for first place but couldn’t quite catch the crew from Barrie and finished 6 seconds back from the lead in second place taking home the silver medal. The final race of the day was Adam Ballard in the men single. Adam started off the race slow but was able close on the second place rower from Western. Adam finished 3.07 seconds behind second place at 4:26.94 to take home a bronze medal. It was a great day for the crew, and we saw some great racing from Jessica and Adam. They took home medals in all the races they were entered in and they hope to keep improving to take on the FISA World Rowing Masters in September. Full results can be seen here.;
The Durham crew will get some much needed rest before training picks up again for the ROWONTARIO Championships in Welland on July 24/25.
